About
One Foot Theatre is a York-based company intent on questioning form and subject in the production and performance of theatre. We seek to develop contemporary work, grounded in interrogating human, political, social and spiritual relationships. Our productions are a result of inventive, deep interrogative thought and careful analysis of global theatre trends. We work in ensemble with every idea given time and space to be tried and tested. We identify ourselves as an eclectic group with artists from France, Cyprus, Zimbabwe and the UK. This brings clashing and opposing cultural views which drives our creativity and informs our work.
Founded in 2018 by Butshilo Nleya and Lucy Fourgs.

One Foot?
We started, like all great companies do; by stealing from the best. We used our idols to pepper our DNA, then moved on to birthing our own fresh creations. After a few discussions we realised that we were drawn to spirituality and to the earth. This is what grounds us. We are interested in humanity and it's stories. Our footprint is our grounding, our stand and our creative stem on the earth. From here we can draw the energy to influence and reflect the humanity we see - or the humanity we wish to.
Production team
We are Butshilo Nleya, Lucy Fourgs, Scarlett Wood, Katie Newbould, Tanika Lay, Isaac Saward, Joanna Papanastassiou, Rebecca Burden, Nafsika Hadjichristou and Roberto Luis Del Pino.
Mantra
One Foot is founded on a plethora of principles surrounding the ensemble. One such principle was created by Maria Shevtsova, who succinctly describes ensemble as "a group breathing as one". We celebrate our autonomy and individual talents, but by finding common ground between us, we find the impetus to pull together as a group. Ours is a group of individual stars that all shine uniquely and make up a constellation. Our 'breath' is expressed when we share a meal, an idea, an experiment and our view of the world. Through creation and performance, we become one, and we invite audiences to become part of our oneness.
